October PDM - Going beyond Toyota

Lean is great but how many companies in America are able to really do it properly.

We take some of the tools like: 5S, Kaizen Blitz, SMED, TPM, etc. and get excellent results but it doesn’t really put us on the Lean journey and make us internationally competitive. I will talk about how Toyota does it and also lead you to the next step telling you what Canon, Aisin and other Japanese companies are doing.

June Plant Tour - Durham Treatment Plant

Learn about process manufacturing and how and why Durham partnered with Clean Water Services and Ostera to become the first US based plant to turn "waste" into a by-product.

John joined RadiSys in 2008. Prior to joining RadiSys, John served as Vice President of Global Operations for Planar Systems and Vice President of Supply Chain and Manufacturing Operations for Tektronix, where he was responsible for worldwide manufacturing operations, including the deployment of Lean Sigma. Prior to joining Tektronix, John served as Vice President of Customer Support and Service for Xerox Office Printing Business. Earlier in his career, John served in a number of manufacturing leadership roles at Tektronix and Digital Equipment Corporation. Mr. Major holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering and an Executive MBA from the University of Washington.

DEQ Lean - Kaizen Business Process Improvement

At January's PDM, we got insight into how a local company, Adec, applies Lean concepts to its manufacturing organization and supplier base. At March's PDM, we will explore Lean process improvements at Oregon Department of Environmental Quality in an office context. Please join the Portland Chapter as we welcome John Reel to our meeting.

About our Speaker

John Reel is a certified Project Management Professional and Process Improvement Coordinator for Oregon DEQ. While working for DEQ, he is introducing and establishing the Lean Culture. With several Lean - Kaizen events successfully conducted, the desire to empower DEQ employees to simplify their business process is growing.

John has over 20 years of real-world IT business expertise. He also has a degree in business administration, and group dynamics. John has 6 years business process improvement experience and 2 years Lean - Kaizen (Lean Six Sigma) project management expertise. In his spare time, John is a facilitative mediator volunteer for the City of Vancouver and Clark County.

The Portland APICS Chapter is excited to announce our next PDM in February, focusing on Sustainability.

Mr. Kohl’s Biographical Information:

David W Kohl is an International business consultant and cultural adviser specializing in the greater China region.

David’s multicultural experience began whilst growing up with an American Father and a Chinese Mother in a diverse International environment. His orientation was further honed through academic study as well as insight developed through years living in The People’s Republic of China and working there with organizations, in a variety of sectors, including The United States Embassy, DuPont, Starwood Resorts, Jebsen & Co., SOHU.com, Beijing University IELP, as well as many others.

Mr. Kohl’s clients in North America include Nike, Intel, Columbia Sportswear, Paccess, Portland International Airport, InFocus, Radysis, Logitech, ESCO, The University of Oregon School of Law, The University of Portland, Pamplin School of Business, The Oregon Law Institute, The Freeman Foundation East Asia Resource Center and Northwest Christian University.

David has served as a Director of the Northwest China Council since 2003, and is Co-Chair of the NWCC China Business Network. He holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in business administration from the University of Oregon, and received a Master of International Management degree, with honors, from the cutting edge program at Portland State University. Mr. Bloom’s Biographical Information:

Michael is President and founder of Offshore Solutions, an offshore manufacturing company with offices in Beaverton, Oregon and the cities of Shenzhen, Shanghai and Tianjin China. Offshore Solutions manufactures custom engineered components, assemblies and finished products. Some of these products are sold by Fortune 500 companies such as Nissan, Chrysler, Microsoft, and Whirlpool.

Michael has been working in China for nearly 25 years and has published numerous
articles and technical papers on issues related to successful outsourcing of manufacturing processes. Michael has a B.S. in Electrical Engineering from the City College of the City University of New York, an M.S. in Counseling from CW Post Div. of Long Island University, and doctoral work in Educational Administration from Hofstra University. Besides publications relating to China he has published nearly 100 articles on leading edge technologies for publications such as EETimes, Electronic Design, High Performance Systems and others. He has been featured in Oregonian articles about quality problems with Chinese products.

Michael is now president of the Northwest China Council, the Northwest’s premiere organization for stakeholders interested in Chinese business, culture and language. Links to educational institutions include long-term membership on the Corporate Advisory Board of Portland State University’s Masters In International Management program and his role as an advisor to Portland Community College’s Small Business Development Center where he also lectures on starting import businesses. With his interest in Middle East affairs he also conducts Hope for Peace presentations on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

The September PDM held at the Home Builders Association featured Rick Leach. This PDM had an icebreaker where each person wore (tapped) a word with the definition printed on their backs.
